Meatpacking Uncorked – NYC Wine and Food Fest -updated!

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

(I just updated this with photos I took today)

While I am not a big wine drinker there was still some food enjoyment to be had at this event. The opportunity to check out the many chichi boutiques in a festive atmosphere was definitely attractive. The best one by far was Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor! I loved the decor, it was bright and full of fun pop art. The vibe was party or club-like and people were having fun. I can see this being a really cool place to get your hair done or shop for beauty products. Lots of neon and shiny silver. I’m going to try and snap some pics there tomorrow. But where they really stood out is the treats they had. One of the few places to offer food in addition to wine they had an impressive display of sweets from Heaven, a bakery in Bovina, NY. They had cookies, brownies, ginger bread, and more. I had a fudge brownie and it was really stellar. The very dark fudgy kind. Possibly the fudgiest I’ve ever had! It also had a satisfying sugar crunch. The other fun thing was the illy Push Button House where they were serving up complimentary coffee and Jacques Torres Wicked Fun truffles. Mmmm… I saw Wine Cellar Sorbets again, scooping up samples next to Pastis and I got to try the Sangria flavor and their new Port flavor, they’ve really been hitting it out of the park for me. Every flavor is a winner!

Here are more photos of Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor since they kindly allowed me to photograph in there today. This decor matches my sensibilities exactly! They even have Murakami flower pillows on their hot pink lounge (I have the pin version).

They have a lot of mermaid dolls suspended above the rinsing area…

You can see the whole area here, complete with Hokusai inspired iridescent wallpaper!

Speaking of wallpaper, Michael Angelo designs fruit wallpaper that not only looks delicious it is scratch and sniff! It is included in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Here’s another interior shot. I love this place! Thanks to Kitty and Michael Angelo for your hospitality!wonderlandint.jpg

A Sweet (Jewish) New Year!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

It’s time for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and it’s traditional to eat sweet things at this time to usher in a sweet new year. Some of my favorite things to have for the holiday are the most basic. Apples dipped in honey (pomegranates in honey are also traditional) and challah bread dipped in honey. For Rosh Hashanah special round and sweet challahs are baked (sweeter than the usual ones) and they are so good! They are round to symbolize the circle of the year. It’s also traditional to try out new fruits that you’ve never had before. If you’re looking for a specific confection one that comes to mind is Teiglach. It’s made of small balls of sweet crunchy cake piled together with nuts and covered in a sticky honey glaze. Teiglach is kind of challenging to eat since you have to pull it apart in clumps, but it definitely is sweet! Its should be found at Moishe’s Kosher Bake Shop in the East Village and other kosher bakeries. Even if you’re not Jewish I encourage you to participate in these traditions and at least try out apples dipped in honey once in a while. Sometimes the simplest thing is the best.

Hello Hello I’m back again!

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I know. I’ve been remiss in blogging of late. Partially because my site was malfunctioning slightly, so I just wanted to keep the updates mainly about events and news. Now that it’s fixed I aim to return to some more frivolous blogging. I also plan to post a lot more artwork and works in progress so you can see what I’m up to.

Things I’m currently into: BBC America. I’ve grown obsessed with Doctor Who (LOVE David Tennant), Torchwood (took some time to grow on me but I love it now), and The Mighty Boosh.

The Boosh has been an obsession for over a year now and BBC America is showing it at 1am on Friday nights. Vince Noir is awesome! Also I like Hex. So, suddenly it seems I have a favorite channel.

Also catching Yo Gabba Gabba (funny clip in link) on Kids on Demand / Nickelodeon. Totally excellent kids show. One of the creators is also the singer of The Aquabats (who Matt and I have been longtime fans of). Yo Gabba Gabba is very dance oriented with lots of songs and the music is great, the visuals strongly remind me of the old Japanese show Kure Kure Kure Takora. That’s a good thing! Even if you don’t have kids you’ll like it.

I’m currently reading Ubik by Philip K Dick. It’s riveting!

MoCCA Art Fest and Hanley’s pics!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

What a fun weekend! The signing at Jim Hanley’s was great (I love that store) and it was wonderful seeing all the other cartoonists as usual. Kudos to Ivan Velez for getting another cool event together! Then the MOCCA Art Fest, which is pretty much the main comix event of the year in my opinion. Great crowd, as usual, and so many talented folks! My minis were popular and I got a lot of positive feedback on Tough Love. All the touring has paid off, people have really been noticing the write-ups I’ve been getting as well as the great job on distribution Manic D Press does. I’ve gotten reports of Tough Love sighted in bookstores everywhere! Here are some pics from Hanleys and one of Alison Bechdel and I at MoCCA. It’s been so great talking with her at the events I’ve attended the past year. This has been a very special year for comics and Fun Home is a big part of that! Also, the anthology Life Meter 2 that Matt and I are in sold out on Saturday! Woo-hoo! It’s got so many great people in it and is helmed by Zack Giallongo, Dave Roman, Stephanie Yue. Awesome people all-around!
