Free comic book day!

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Was a lot of fun. Matt had a signing at Rocketship and was mobbed by kids. I have a feeling Saltwater Taffy will be a big hit! Here is a cute pic of Matt I took. He’ll have more posted at his site soon I’m sure…mattfree08.jpg

Also here’s a fun pic of me with cupcakes at my bff Xtine’s wedding. Cupcakes!

Manga news! I’m adapting Gakuen Prince!

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Big news! I just got my first assignment adapting a manga translation! It’s for the upcoming Del Rey Manga release, Gakuen Prince by Jun Yuzuki. It promises to be funny and have pretty boys (like my fave manga The Wallflower), sounds just right for me!

More on that Women in Comics panel

Marion Vitus posted a great blog on the Friends of Lulu website about the panel I moderated. It was fun and educational! Read the run-down here.

A Very Special NY Comicon!

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

The NY Comicon was so great! While I didn’t have a table, I participated by moderating the amazing Women In Comics panel on Friday. It had the amazing talents of Karen Green, Gail Simone, Becky Cloonan, Shelly Bond, Jennifer Grunwald, and Heidi MacDonald. That is pretty much a dream line-up and we had a packed room. As moderator I got to plan the questions with the help of Marion Vitus, who organized the whole thing for Friends of Lulu and it was just such a great experience! Probably the best Women in Comics panel I’ve been involved with and I think a lot of attendees would agree. Then Saturday I signed at the FOL booth and Sunday I was a panelist on Sticky Pages, a gay panel moderated by the ever talented Ivan Velez Jr. There were a LOT of amazing panelists on that one (including Joan Hilty, Ariel Schrag, Jose Villarubia, Phil Jimenez, Tim Fish, Jennifer Camper, and more)  and everybody was great, that one was also packed. I think the state of comics is looking pretty great when these diversity focused panels are getting such a great crowd response at a mainstream convention like this.  The big news of the con for us was the debut of Saltwater Taffy, Matt’s gorgeous new book from Oni. On a side note, this is the first time I saw Billy’s Bakery set up at Javits Center and I was so happy! They make some of my fave NY cupcakes ^_^

Kids Comics day at Jim Hanley’s and flowers!

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

I stopped in to Jim Hanley’s today where they were having an amazing kid’s comics day event! I snapped some pics of Misako Rocks, Dave Roman, Raina Telgemeier, and Jay Lynch. It was a cool time!

Then I had some frozen yogurt at the nearby Crazy Bananas that has a very strange display which is pictured below. They also had a signed picture of Molly Shannon from SNL, who is apparently a fan of their store. I thought the yogurt was pretty good. The fruit on top of it was fresh.

Then I went home and enjoyed some more local flowers yay!

Reading and rocking

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Been busy catching up on filing (taxes, etc.), reading, and rocking out. Books I’ve been reading: Little Vampire by Joann Sfar, Garage Band by Gipi, Steady Beat by Rivkah, and Love is a Mixed Tape by Rob Sheffield, to name a few.

I also got to see Skum City, a fun new punk band. Yay! Also drawing and writing away ^_^

The greatest book of all time!

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Ok, maybe the greatest cat photo book of all time. John Lund’s Life According to Maude: A Photo Expose. This enjoyably campy photo book follows a sassy cat who likes to wear vintage hats, hang out at the salon, eat chocolates, drink cocktails, and spend days at pastry shops and cafes. My kind of kitty! Buy it! It’s genius!
