Buddha and Kannon in Kamakura!

On this trip I decided to do some traveling outside of Tokyo, which I hadn’t done previously, so I used my JR train pass and took a day trip to Kamakura. It’s about an hour trip from the Tokyo area and totally worth it.

While the great Buddha (Daibutsu) was a gorgeous sight, I found Hase-Dera, the temple of the great Kannon even more impressive. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed of the giant wooden Kannon statue, but I found the grounds so gorgeous and full of interesting sites, there was plenty to photograph.

In addition to those gorgeous Buddhist sites, Kamakura has a great (and long!) shopping street and Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Shrine (a huge Shinto shrine) too! Here are some shrine pics:

Some fun things I got to eat there (both purple!) include a Murasaki-imo (purple potato) croquette and candied grapes. Yum!
